Regarding "KWO"
07 September 2010, 11:03:35, Kuristina Oyama
Hello everyone,
I hope this letter finds every great supporter of Honbu/ IKO Sosai in wonderful spirits...!
I have quite a few inquires about the recent activities of Matsui's European Branch chief's (or former) . I will answer some questions to ease unnecessary speculations.
1) I have not spoken to any representatives from the newly formed "KWO". Neither has anyone from Honbu.
2) We did not know anything about the process of "KWO" forming or what the entity is about.
3) I was shown the "logo" which implies it is connected to my father and his Kyokushin which is being consulted to the experts.
4) I am not going to Holland or Europe this coming October.
Some have felt very unsettled with all rumors flying around. I hope this brought clarity.
Thank you very much for your time. I hope to see you all next year at the Mas Oyama Memorial Tournament.
Osu and Om,
Kuristina Oyama

Sensei’s and sempai’s training Tsunami Honbu Netherlands
23 March 2010, 22:40:20, Nico Waerts
On the 6th February a "sensei/senpai training" was held in the Tsunami Honbu Hardinxveld-Giessendam, with 15 participants from different parts of the Netherlands. Shihan Jan de Bruin taught the class which mainly focussed on two kata, Pinan sono San and Yantsu. We also did taikyoku sono ichi URA, which I'm sure made more heads than mine spin, and must have been a rather amusing sight the first time(s) around! A main purpose of the sensei training is to make sure that the instructors in the different local clubs teach the kata the same way. It was a real privilege as a lower grade karateka to get to train with this group and also get an insight into the kind of thinking and planning that lies behind the instruction we receive in the a normal karate class. As Shihan de Bruin pointed out in his brief introduction, one day we will hopefully all go on to teach others, so it's never too early to learn how. We did learn a whole lot; our Pinan sono San was trimmed to a higher level, and we also learned a whole new (to us lower grades, at least) kata. As we left the Honbu Hardinxveld we also took with us the inspiration from the positive, committed atmosphere at the training. Another thing that made a lasting impression was the way Shihan de Bruin often pointed out that there may be several equally valid ways to do a certain move in a kata. While you need to be consistent in the teaching within one organization, and therefore need to settle for a method and stick to it ("we go by this book"), this doesn't mean that this is the only Right way, and that others who do it differently are wrong. An important message, because it forms the basis for real respect towards others. All in all, some very instructive hours, so thanks to Shihan and everyone at the training!
Thanks to Jenny Ullgren from Sweden, for writing this story. She is training now for two years as guest at the Kyokushin Budokai (on the Island Texel) from the Netherlands

Mas Oyama Kyokushin test at Doorn, the Netherlands, 2009

Mas Oyama Kyokushin test at Doorn, the Netherlands, 2009
On December 12, for 120 Tsunami karatekas the Kyokushin test took place at the Marines barrack at the beautiful town of Doorn. After a good warming up, it was the shihan and co-founder of the Tsunami group Jan de Bruin’s turn to start. As expected, he succesfully finished the Kihon, kumite and renraku waza program.
A special program was set up for the juniors. It is worth mentioning that the Youth was allowed to perform their kumite training program in a real boxing ring. The senior karatekas went outside to do various exercises, like gait training and the storm track with a brand new rope. In the dojo named after him, kaicho Bluming showed the higher belts the All Round Budo. This was really appreciated by everybody. The kaicho is already a legend and, despite the age of 76, he still is in top form.
Also present were a number of visiting instructors, amongst whom: the shihans P. Viguurs and Bert Ruhe, the senseis Nico Waerts, Cor de Haan, and Klaas Wit, and the sempai Ruud van Buuren. The managed to keep the spirit. And, of course, many thanks to the Marine Corps for providing the accomodation and the excellent organisation which was in the hands of Corporal Koenders.
The Tsunami group can certainly look back at a very successful day. Hopefully more of these events will follow in the future.

Royama loses rights to use "Kyokushin-kan" name.
20 November 2009, 10:27:31, Robert Engelken
On October 30th 2009, the Intellectual Property Rights Section of the Japanese High Court overruled a July 2008 decision by the Japanese Patent Office to allow the registration of the name “Karate-do Kyokushin-kan” (Royama’s group).
In its decision to allow the registration, the Patent Office had stated that the activities of a former student of the founder of Kyokushin Karate, Masutatsu Oyama, did not violate Japanese trademark law if they are deemed the same legal entity.
Under Japanese trademark law, any person or organization is prohibited from using a trademark that is too similar to an already existing and well-known trademark if they are a separate legal entity. In this case, the issue was whether the name “Kyokushin-kan” violated the rights of the Oyama family, the legal owner of the name “Kyokushinkaikan” and a number of variations.
Any name or mark that is well-known cannot be registered by any person or organization considered to be a separate legal entity. In their initial verdict, the Patent Office had said that the group registering the name ‘Kyokushin-kan” was continuing the activities of Kyokushin Karate and as former students of the Kyokushin Karate founder were not considered to be a separate legal entity.
High Court Judge Tetsuhiro Nakano rejected the Patent Office verdict, emphasizing the fact that Kyokushin-kan is clearly a separate legal entity to Kyokushinkaikan and as such their name registration is in violation of Japanese trademark law.
In his summing up, Judge Nakano said, "After Mr. Oyama's passing, his Kyokushinkaikan organization splintered into numerous groups. The Kyokushin group of the founder’s family and other splintered groups are not legally related.
“Therefore even a former student cannot register the Kyokushin name, despite any alterations, because they are deemed to be a separate legal entity. The words "Karate-do" and "Kan" are generic but “Kyokushin” is a private trademark and the created word of famous person.”

The 17" Annual Danish Open IKO Sosai Kyokushin Training Camp 2009
30 September 2009, 22:06:38, Søren Sandersen
The 17" Annual Danish Open Training Camp 2009 was organized and led by Flemming Jinzen Schröter Shihan, who represents the section of IKO Sosai (the original IKO of Mas Oyama) in European since 2008. Although IKO Sosai, also known under IKOK (International Karate Organization Kyokushinkaikan) is the original IKO, the organization had to make a refreshing new start, because of all the fights in Court (such as for legal rights and to have the original Honbu back in their rightful possession). Mrs. Kikuko (Kuristina) Oyama, the 3rd daughter of Mas Oyama is the IKO Kyokushinkaikan Custodian, while Yoshikazu Suzuki is the Kancho (leader / company president) and Miyake Susumu Shihan, who has been Mas Oyama’s right hand for decades, is the organizations Executive Committee Chairman. All 3 -and behind and besides them many more- put in a lot of effort to rebuild Mas Oyamas legacy the way he would do himself. Because of their hard work and loyalty they are an example for all of us in Kyokushin worldwide. During the Danish Kyokushin Camp 2009 all teachers and students worked hard, the Kyokushin way; the way as set by Sosai.
Denmark have IKO Sosai Kyokushin Karate, since the 1967. The first Original IKO Branch Chief was Jorgen Albrechtsen that was grading Nidan in 1969 by Jon Bluming at this time 6. Dan. Denmark is a very strong Kyokushin country, and was in the early kyokushin days dominated in Kumite by the middleweight fighter Fleming Jinzen Shihan 72 kg that have be winning the national Danish championships 7 years in a row in all weight classes from light weight to open class, he was also the first Danish kyokushin fighter that was winning the IKO European Open Kyokushin Karate Tournament in London 1982 in both Kumite and Tameshiwari in middleweight. In the same tournament in middleweight division you will find Andy Hug Switzerland, Nick De Costa England, Glen Sharp England it was the strongest middleweight division ever.
Flemming Jinzen Shihan is also the lightest kyokushin fighter 73,5kg ever to win second place in The Holland Open where he win against some of the best kyokushin fighter like Andy Hug Switzerland 2nd place at the world Open karate Tournament in 1987, Koon Scharrenberg Holland, Ceno Marxer Liechtensein No. 6 in the 2nd world Open karate Tournament in 1979. Flemming Jinzen Shihan was fighting in the Sosai`s World Open Karate Tournament in Japan in 1979 and after the Tameshiwari he will have be winning a 10 place.
In 2008 he made the World Tameshiwari record as the oldest person(53 years) to break 20 board with three technique, seiken (5), shuto (6), empi(9), in 1984 we was in the Guinness world record book for the first person in the world to successfully made the "Bottle Cut" with four bottle.
With 108 participating the 17" annual summer camps with Kyokushin Karate combined with kickboxing and all round fighting was a great success and the International Summer Camp in 2009 made history for being the first official IKO Sosai Open Summer Camp in Europe. The summer camp was spread out over 3 days with several blocks of 2 ½ hours training in a close-fitting schedule from 06.00 early in the morning - 24.00 nighttime. Saturday night a one hour night training was held.
The camp was attended by students up to 3rd dan and led by instructors from 4th - 6th dan.
Flemming Jinzen Schröter Shihan 6. Dan was -in teaching- assisted by several of his students from Denmark, his former student Klaus Rex Shihan 6. Dan from Spain and Willem Brunekreef Sensei 4. Dan from Holland, Soren Sandersen Sensei 4. Dan Chairman of IKO Sosai Denmark and Horatiu Neagoie Sensei 3. Dan from Romania, was happy to have two hours teaching kyokushin basic kihon for the children.
During the camp quality time was spend on all facets of Kyokushin, such as basic kihon, kihon no kata, ippon kumite, kyokushin kumites, kumite and kata. The afternoon of final day was reserved for the fighters who needed (or wanted) to fight their10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 man kumite.
Besides Kyokushin Karateka the camp was also attended by Kickboxers and All Round fighting practitioners who trained as well together with the Kyokushin group as separated under their own instructors.
Next year we will focus on the original Sosai IKO Kyokushin training and we are honored to invite your all to the 2nd Annual International IKO Sosai Kyokushin Training Camp at the 1-3 of October 2010 in Vordingborg Denmark, with the honorable Yoshikazu Suzuki Kancho and Mrs. Kikuko (Kuristina) Oyama IKO Kyokushinkaikan Custodian from IKO Sosai Honbu, Japan together with several world class Kyokushin instructor as Flemming Jinzen Schroter Shihan Denmark, Klaus Rex Shihan Spain, William Brunekreef Sensei Holland, Ralf Fahrun Shihan Germany, Horatiu Neagoie Sensei and more from IKO Sosai Europe.
